Why stay in Thessaloniki more than 3 nights?
Because there is so much to do that you don’t know about! Weekdays are the perfect time to enjoy the city as a local and avoid the weekend crowds. We have collected some of the best activities for you to do in three days. And for the more adventurous, we added two more days so you do not miss out on anything!
Day 1
- 08.30 Wake up at Zeus and have your breakfast at the common room.
- 10.00 Meet up for the free walking tour of the city center and experience the big open air museum that is Thessaloniki.
- 13.00 Chill in the Kapani open food market for some tsipouro and Greek delicacies.
- 15.00 Visit the archaeological museum, admittedly the best museum in the city.
- 16.00 Recharge in the common room and call your loved ones.
- 17.00 Head in the city for some good traditional gyros at Katsamaka, and top it off with a nice pastry triangle at Elenidis patisserie.
- 18.00 Have your coffee or beer at a small neighbourhood place like Elxate or Philia.
- 20.30 Return to the common room for a movie night with other fellow travellers.
- 23.00 Head to your cozy mattress for a good night’s sleep and prepare for tomorrow.
Day 2
- 09.00 Wake up and head on to Serraikon for some great bougatsa, Thessaloniki’s traditional breakfast.
- 10.00 Meet up for the free walking tour of the picturesque Upper City.
- 13.00 Stay in the area and have some lunch at Steki tavern.
- 15.00 Have your coffee break at the small terrace of Little Big House.
- 16.30 Head up the castle walls to watch an amazing sunset.
- 18.30 Recharge at the common room and grab some friends.
- 19.30 Get a table at Prigipessa tavern for some live Greek music.
- 22.30 Head to the hostel’s bar for some good cocktails.
Day 3
- 09.00 Get your breakfast in the common room for some mingling.
- 10.00 Rent a bicycle from City Bikes and ride along the city’s seaside all the way to the Concert hall.
- 11.00 Grab a coffee and enjoy the sea view, then head to the city’s port where you will find the MOMus modern museum.
- 14.00 Return your bike and go grab lunch and some nice beer at the traditional small eatery Kafeneio Odysseia.
- 16.00 Take a stroll around the area and visit Saint Sophia Church, the Church of Acheiropoietos, the Modiano market and land yourself at the interesting Jewish Museum.
- 19.00 Head back to the common room for a nice pasta dinner with fellow travellers.
- 21.00 Explore the city’s bars in the Valaoritou area and the bustling Mavili Square.
Day 4
- 09.00 Get a hearty breakfast at the common room and head on to Paradosiako bakery to get a sesame bagel ‘koulouri’.
- 10.00 Take the city bus and head to the forest area of Thessaloniki, the Seich Sou Forest.
- 11.00 Start your hike on path M6 and enjoy the beautiful colours and nature away from the city.
- 13.00 Along the way you will find a few places to sit down and enjoy the view, as well as a few springs to top up your water.
- 14.00 Usually the hiking trip takes around 3 hours, so by this time you will be heading back to the point you started.
- 14.30 Walk a little bit and find the Food Truck Park, where you can choose your meal from three different food trucks.
- 16.00 Get yourself back to the hostel and find your fellow travellers for a walk at the seafront and the view of the sun setting in the sea.
- 18.00 Go back to your room and chill a little bit, it’s been a very active day!
- 20.00 Grab a profiterole from Choureal, but if you’re more hungry than that, sit down for a bite at Contrabando, which is very close to the hostel.
Day 5
Excursions close to the city
- 09.00 Get yourself excited because you can go visit the actual tombs of the Macedonian kings! The museum of the Royal Tombs in Vergina is without doubt, one of the finest, most immersive establishments you will find in Europe. Feeling like you are going underground yourself, get lost in the legends of the past. It is open from 09:00am to 05.00pm every day.
- 13.30 There are plenty of tavernas for you to choose from outside the museum. Have a nice beer and some souvlaki to get back to the world of the living.
- 15.00 Don’t forget to take your dose of nature at the Platania Verginas small park.
- 17.00 After the adventure head back to the city to talk all about the experience!
- 18.00 Get some of the finest wood-oven pizzas in you have ever tasted from Salento street food place just two blocks away from the hostel.
- 18.30 Dilly dally around the main market streets of Thessaloniki, Tsimiski street and Egnatia street for some window shopping.
- 19.00 Mingle with the locals for some early drinks at Bulldogs and the Beast pub, Pulp rock pub or Mr. Jones pub.
- 21.00 Head on to the Rover bar for some live music, rock/ punk/ indie/ rebetiko or anything that is going on that day.
Or/and
For an even more active day, you can visit mountain Olympus and hike around its foot, since the tops are covered with snow during fall and winter. But do not fret! There are plenty of things to see around there, and most importantly get lost in nature, in this trip that will last the whole day!
One important point of interest is the ancient city of Dion, a famous archaeological site you cannot miss!
It’s just a bus ride away from the city to the village of Litochoro, where you can even have lunch once you have finished hiking and enjoy the peace.
